The word "HERO" gets bandied about far to much these days .
Webster defines Hero as "a figure in mythology and legend renowed for great stength, courage and daring."
I cringe when I hear an entertainer, or sports figure referred to as a hero. I am ashamed when these same people lambaste the police, fire, rescue, military or other government officials for doing their job. The referrence to people with great wealth that give an edifice to themselves because they didn't want to pay the money in taxes as hero. They are lauded as great heroic individuals, when in reality it is pure self aggrandizement and antigovernment attitude. The poor person that only gives a little but to their own detriment is the true giver and hero because it is an altruistic gift.
I think it is time to acknowledge the true heros in our society. Those men and women the make our system work. Those everyday souls the keep on keeping on. We need to readjust our value system, accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.
It hurts all of us when our people of influence would rather put their arm around a football player and praise them then a soldier, sailor, airman or marine, police-fire-rescue worker or the butcher, baker, factory worker and truck driver.
This all brings me back to the main point of this discussion. General Petraeus is a true American hero and should be acknowledged as such. The reality is that the people who are making the disparaging comments are not fit to polish his boots!!!!

Hey Don! Enjoyed checking out your blog. I agree with you about chewing, it is stupid...but John Wayne chewed, and so do I...lol (hey, city boys use crack and meth, some of us country boys chew...) And once in awhile, I smoke a cigar...maybe two or three times a year. A wise old Doctor told me one time, "What kind of life would it be, if we only did things that were good for us?" He died about three months later from cancer...oh well.
Still Praying for your Sons,
Casey

Don it would be nice, but; I do not see the alpha males in government like we had in the 50's through much of the 60's. I seem to recall most were WWII vets back then, and; they had a much more civil tone even during barking sessions. My impression of many of today's males is one of sissy boys. I recall my own mother telling me shortly before her death in 85 that Women's Lib would hurt women the most, as well as the kids they raised.

So Koch believes we should leave Iraq immediately!?

With disgrace and cowardice.

"It is not possible to negotiate peace with an enemy that only wants war & sees that you only want peace".

Yep, it would be so nice that most likely it wouldn't, couldn't ever happen, except in our daydreams.

Power and pride and just plain stupidity are the burdens that anyone in high government must contend with. Plus if a man is elected, he knows he is there only until he can't keep his voters happy (or decieved), so he is continually looking for an advantage or to bring a disadvantage to his distractors and others that he fears.

Then you have the few that are actually mentally disturbed.
We have several of those in positions of power now.

Like everyone is saying and fearing, it is going to get much worse before it gets any better.

I might be country boy, but every male in this country family has served in the military including a son in Iraq as I write this. We are Red White and Blue!

Dear Mr. Bendell,

I am favorably impressed with your writing skills, though we are far apart on many things. The way to bridge such gaps is to concentrate on the specific, concrete, and factual before moving to generalizations involving good and bad.

The thing that strikes me as most specific and immediately practical in your thoughts is the idea that not voting more money for "war" will endanger American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like you, I am against endangering anyone's life as such. But where we seem to disagree on facts is simply this: there is plenty of money appropriated right now to keep American personnel safe and secure in the permanent bases we have built in Iraq, and also to bring every one of them home now.

And in case you didn't know it, John Wayne was a draft dodger.

Where would we be without opinions?
I can honestly say we are all entitled to our own. But, I will agree that we as Americans have become soft. We let the media make our decisions for us. We let the majority rule - even when we don't totally agree with what majority says. I come from a different view than most. I dont agree with what our government has become. Period - no one politcal party is better than the other. What we have is a corrupt system looking out for itself. Trying to win votes by pleasing the crowd once every 4 years. How can this be? Didn't we set out to become a free country? Didn't we write out a constitution protecting the citizens from this very thing? It seems to me like the polititians are the power hungry, money hungry people of this country. I am not an extremely educated person when it comes to politics. I don't claim to be. What I am is a disappointed citizen that doesn't even see the point in voting. To me it is like voting for the compost pile or the dog poop pile. Either way, you loose.
Where did we go so wrong?
